CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Toreros defeated USF, 5-0, in the first round of the WCC Championships Thursday. San Diego moves on to compete in the semifinals against No. 46 Portland on Friday at 2 p.m.
"It was a great start for the boys today in the first round of the conference tournament," said Head Coach Ryan Keckley. "USF makes you earn it at every spot. We had to battle to secure this win."
The men started their match determined to get ahead. They followed through on courts one and two to clinch the doubles point. Joel Gamerov and Gui Osorio won their seventh conference doubles match of the season against the Don's, 6-3. The No. 1 senior team of Filip Vittek and Joshua Page clinched the doubles point for the third conference match in a row, 6-2.
In singles play the Toreros powered forward and took not only the points needed to clinch the win, but scored an extra point in a rare double match finisher. Gamerov, Osorio, Alexandros Araouzos and Vittek all won on their courts.
Araouzos defeated Woravin Kumthonkittikul at the sixth postion in a 6-2, 6-4 decision. Osorio, who played at the No. 3 position toppled Johan Joenhagen 6-2, 6-3. Gamerov took his second win of the day against Paul Giraud 6-2, 6-2 on court four. Finally, the No. 1 singles player, No. 94 Filip Vittek was able to put his match on the scoreboard when he finished at the same time as the match clincher.
"We came out a bit nervous in doubles but settled in after a few shaky games," said Coach Keckley. "Five out of our seven starters have never played in the WCCs, so the nerves were expected. We handled the moment well and will be able to play free for tomorrow's semi-final match against a confident Portland team."
The Toreros move on to the semifinals against the No. 1 WCC seed, No. 46 Portland, at 2 p.m.
