LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The University of San Diego men’s tennis team’s season came to an end Saturday evening when they fell to No. 4 USC 4-1 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Toreros knocked off No. 29 Alabama 4-3 a day earlier to advance to the second round for the third straight season, but the four-time defending national champion Trojans proved to be too much.

After winning a thrilling doubles point yesterday, the Toreros had their hands full today. The Trojans started out the day with an 8-2 win at the No. 3 spot when Emilio Gomez and Michael Grant knocked off Romain Kalaydjian and Victor Pugliese. USC won the doubles point when Yannick Hanfmann and Ray Sarmiento defeated Thibaut Visy and Clarke Spinosa 8-4.

The Trojans feature a singles lineup with six ranked players and they were able to quickly jump out to a 3-0 lead after picking up wins at the No. 3 and 4 spots. No. 45 Yannick Hanfmann was the first to finish, defeating Romain Kalaydjian 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 3. No. 36 Roberto Quiroz followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win to snap Uros Petronijevic’s nine match win streak at the No. 4.

The Toreros got on the board after Clarke Spinosa earned a 0-6, 6-1, 6-1 win at the No. 2 spot over the 16th ranked Ray Sarmiento. The 95th ranked Spinosa ends the season on a ten-match win streak.

The Toreros clinched the victory after No. 90 Eric Johnson edged out Victor Pugliese 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot. Pugliese had beat Johnson earlier this season when the Trojans visited San Diego.

The Toreros, who finish the season with an 18-10 record, will return everyone next season except for senior captain Thibaut Visy.
