LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Toreros were defeated 4-1 by No. 30 Wisconsin in the first round of the NCAA Championships on Friday. San Diego qualified after they earned three wins and two upsets at the WCC Championships two weeks ago.
"Not the result we were hoping for, but a lot to be proud of today out of this group," said Head Coach Ryan Keckley. "We will use this match as a foundation and continue to build upon this experience moving forward."
The Toreros lost the doubles point to the Badgers despite a win on court one from powerhouse duo Filip Vittek and Joshua Page. The No. 1 team defeated Chema Carranza and Josef Dodridge in a 6-3 decision.
There was stiff competition on every court in singles. Page was the first Torero to lose his match to a Badger. Osgar O'Hoisin downed Page, which broke his three match win streak, on court four 6-0, 6-3.
Wisconsin's Lamar Remy broke Vittek's four match win streak on court one with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. At this point the Toreros were down 3-0, only one match away from defeat. But one Torero fought back to keep the men in the match.
Gui Osorio pulled out a win against Josef Dodridge on court two, he defeated the Badger in a two set match, 6-2, 6-3.
The final point that ultimately clinched the match for Wisconsin was left on court six. Alexandros Araouzos lead Daniel Soyfer through a three set match, but lost 6-1, 4-6, 6-1.
"The seniors will be missed as they offered incredible leadership these past few months," said Coach Keckley. "The young guns did spectacular handling the pressure of playing in their first NCAA. Hats of to Gui Osorio for snagging his first post season win as a Torero, finishing the season off with a record of 16-8."
With a loss in the first round, the Toreros end an outstanding and record breaking season. The men's tennis program is the first team in school history to win four consecutive WCC Championships. Both Filip Vittek and Alexandros Araouzos are the only Toreros to hold this title.
The men head home with a 17-11 overall record and 6-3 conference record.
The season is over for all but one Torero. No. 93 Filip Vittek will compete in the NCAA Singles Championships in Athens, Georgia on May 24. Vittek has competed at NCAAs for both the team and doubles events, but this will be his first and last trip for singles competition.
