SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's tennis team competed in the San Diego State Fall Invitational on Friday afternoon at the Aztec Tennis Center. The Toreros earned a total of seven wins on the day, all coming in singles action.
Freshman JP Boyd highlighted the afternoon for USD in his first collegiate action by winning a pair of singles contests. Boyd defeated Kieren Thompson of Arizona 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 before going on to top Max Jiganti 6-1, 6-4 in the second round of the "A" Flight.
USD saw all five of their participants in the singles Open Draw advance. Clarke Spinosa posted a 6-0, 6-1 win, while Ciaran Fitzgerald won 7-6(1), 6-1. Thibaut Visy was victorious on the day with a 7-6, 7-5 win, while Victor Pugliese came out on top 6-2, 3-6, 6-1 and Romain Kalaydjian breezed 6-0, 6-0 in the first round.
Garrett Taylor lost in his first round match in the singles "B" Flight, falling to Arizona's Carlos Bermudez 6-0, 6-2. Jakob Karnopp also lost, dropping his match to Sacramento State's Roy Brandys by a score of 6-4, 7-5. Andrew Raphaelson was edged by Aliaksandr Malko of Sac State 7-6(4), 6-2.
In doubles play, both Torero pairs lost in the first round. Boyd and Karnopp were unable to get by Thompson/Dunn of Arizona, losing 8-2, while Raphaelson and Taylor were bested by Jiganti/Salomon 8-5.
Saturday's action will see Boyd moving on to the semifinal of the singles "A" Flight, while Spinosa, Fitzgerald, Visy, Pugliese, and Kalaydjian will compete in the second round of the singles Open Draw. Meanwhile, Taylor and Karnopp are set to play in the singles "B" Flight consolation and Raphaelson will play in the singles "A" Flight consolation. Boyd/Karnopp and Raphaelson/Taylor will each participate in the doubles consolation on Saturday as well.
