SAN DIEGO - August Holmgren reached the final round of the main draw to highlight the final day of competition for San Diego at the Aztec Fall Invite at San Diego State.
Holmgren cruised to a semifinal victory against SDSU's Arnaud Restifo (6-1, 6-2) and advanced to a final-round matchup against UCLA's Austin Rapp who had defeated USD's Alexandros Araouzos (6-2, 7-6 (3)) in the other semifinal match.
Holmgren battled but dropped a 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2, decision to Rapp. Despite the loss, it was an impressive showing for Holmgren, a freshman who was competing in his first collegiate competition.
"I was extremely proud of August's debut," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "He showed a lot of maturity for a first-year player, especially during the final of his first college tournament. It was a great match for August to be a part of and learn from going forward."
Pratt Keerasuntonpong defeated Liberty's Sebastian Mermersky (6-7 (5), 7-5, 10-7) to close out his weekend, while Garrett Kurtz fell to SDSU's Daniel De La Torre, 6-4, 7-6 (8).
Doubles play wrapped up for the Toreros with Araouzos and Holmgren dropping a close 7-6 (5) decision to SDSU's David Hough and Jan Kirchhoff.
"We learned a lot about ourselves this weekend," said Keckley. "Each player stepped up and showed some significant progress during this tournament. Now it becomes about sustaining that level and believing that when push comes to shove, we belong."
USD take next weekend off from competition to prepare for the ITA Regionals in Malibu the following weekend from Oct. 19-23.

SAN DIEGO - August Holmgren and Alexandros Araouzos each won their singles matches to advance to the semifinal round as play continued Saturday at the Aztec Fall Invite.
Holmgren continued the impressive start to his collegiate career with a victory against UCLA's Ben Goldberg, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Araouzos claimed a convincing 6-3, 6-2, win against Chase Burton of Liberty.
The duo will compete on Sunday for spots in the final round.
"It's awesome to see two USD players in the semis of the top draw," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "We played hard today and continued to work through the ups and downs that you have in every match in a positive fashion. I was extremely proud of Alex's singles level in his quarterfinal round. He continues to grow as a player with each match he competes in."
Pratt Keerasuntonpong and Garrett Kurtz won the back-draw of the secondary draw for doubles, earning wins against UCSD's Adrian Cordova and Naara Shin (6-3) and UC Irvine's Mason Hansen and Sasha Krasnov.
"Pratt also raised his level in doubles and showed some grit during adverse times," said Keckley. "Overall it was a great day for the Toreros, and we are looking to finish strong going in to the final rounds tomorrow."
Holmgren and Araouzos picked up a walk-over win against UC Irvine's Vatsal Bajpai and Bruce Man Son Hing but fell to San Diego State's Sander Gjoels-Andersen and Nicholas Mitchell, 6-2, in the semifinals.
The Toreros conclude play at the Aztec Fall Invite on Sunday.

SAN DIEGO - San Diego got off to a strong start Friday at the Aztec Fall Invite, posting a 4-1 singles record.
"It was a great start to the weekend today for the boys," said head coach Ryan Keckley. "We had a great week of practice and we were very prepared to fight today. We problem solved well on court and worked through issues that could have prevented us from reaching the finish line."
August Holmgren made his collegiate debut with an impressive 7-5, 6-3, win against San Diego State's Ignacio Martinez. He advanced to the quarterfinal round on Saturday against UCLA's Ben Goldberg.
"Congrats to August for his first win as a Torero," said Keckley. "It was exciting to see him finally in action and compete so well."
Alexandros Arouzos picked up a hard-fought victory against UCSD's Zach Ermert, 7-5, 6-7 (4), 6-3 to also advance to the quarterfinal round.
Garrett Kurtz won two matches in the secondary draw to advance to the semifinals. He earned victories against UCSD's Naara Shin (6-4, 6-4) and UC Irivine's Sasha Krasnov (6-2, 6-3).
"Garrett had a fantastic day," said Keckley. "He has been putting in the work on court and it was nice to see it pay off like it did in both matches."
Pratt Keerasuntonpong fell to San Diego State's Joel Popov, 6-3, 7-6 (3).
Holmgren and Araouzos teamed up in doubles play to take down Grand Canyon's duo of Freddie Grant and Gregoire Balenci, 6-1.
Keerasuntonpong and Kurtz dropped a tough decision in the doubles secondary draw to Max Borcuti (Liberty) and Daniel De La Torre (San Diego State), 7-6 (3).
USD will look to continue its momentum as it continues play Saturday.
