LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's tennis team had a strong showing on day four of the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships on Saturday at UCLA. Two Torero doubles pairs will be facing off on Sunday in the main draw finals, while Clarke Spinosa will play for the singles title.
USD had an impressive showing in doubles action on the day. Spinosa and Thibaut Visy defeated Marco Comuzzo and Andre Dome of Cal Poly 8-4 in the quarterfinals before going on to sweep Axel Boullin and Benjamin Recknagel of UC Santa Barbara 8-0 in the semifinals.
Also winning both of their matches in thrilling fashion on the day were Romain Kalaydjian and Victor Pugliese, who outlasted UCSB's Mbonisi Ndimande and Ziad Sultan for a 9-7 win in the quarterfinals and battled past the No. 1 seeded pair of Dennis Novikov and Karue Sell of UCLA 9-8 (4) in the semis.
Spinosa led the way in singles by advancing to the final on Sunday with two wins. Spinosa bested Recknagel 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and topped Michael Grant of USC 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals. Spinosa will meet Dome in the singles final slated for 11 am.
In the singles main draw back draw, Ciaran Fitzgerald lost a marathon to Francis Sargeant of BYU 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 in the quarterfinals.
