SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's tennis team was picked to finish second in the 2014 West Coast Conference preseason poll, which was released by the conference on Monday. The Toreros, who finished third in the WCC last season, received 73 points overall and two first-place votes from conference coaches. Senior captain Clarke Spinosa was one of six WCC players named to the preseason all-conference team.
No. 41 USD, the only other team receiving first-place votes, came in behind conference-favorite No. 12 Pepperdine, who took home eight first-place votes and 80 overall points. BYU was voted third with 61 points, followed by San Francisco (50), Santa Clara (50), Pacific (44), Portland (28), and Loyola Marymount (27). Rounding out the poll was Saint Mary's (26) in ninth place and Gonzaga (11) in tenth.
Spinosa (Claremont, Calif.), who is on track to have the most singles wins in USD history, was selected to the All-WCC First Team last season as well. Spinosa had an impressive fall season in singles, winning the championship at the Harvard Chowder Fest.
Spinosa was 6-2 in singles play during the fall and is currently playing at both the No. 1 singles and doubles spot this season.
The Toreros (0-2) return to the court this Saturday when they host UC San Diego and UC Irvine for a double-header. Play begins against the Tritons at 9:00 a.m..
