SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 68 University of San Diego men's tennis team receives its first honors this season with West Coast Conference Doubles Players of the Week recognition as juniors Ciaran Fitzgerald and Andrew Raphaelson took home the honors for March 13, 2014 announced by the WCC on Thursday afternoon.
Last week, Fitzgerald and Raphaelson cruised past Rice's Max Andrews and Adam Gustafsson 8-3 leading the Toreros to winning their sixth doubles point in a row. Five out of their six doubles opponents have been apart of top ranked teams: #12 Pepperdine, #33 Alabama, #75 UC Irvine, #56 South Florida, and #31 South Carolina (rankings noted on scheduled day of play). Fitzgerald and Raphaelson stayed perfect in doubles play during that week, including holding a six-match winning streak.
As a pair, Fitzgerald and Raphaelson are first on the team with a 7-1 doubles record on the year in regular season, playing exclusively at No. 3. This is the first player of the week nod for either player. The duo is coming off a win against the University of the Pacific 8-6, helping the Toreros (6-4, 2-0 WCC) clinch their ninth doubles point in a row.
Fitzgerald and Raphaelson will look to help USD post a win in their next match at home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. PT against No. 2 Oklahoma.
