Spinosa Named WCC Scholar Athlete of the Year

June 10, 2014

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior tennis star Clarke Spinosa was named the Mike Gilleran WCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the conference office announced Tuesday.

The lone senior on the team, Spinosa played No. 1 in singles and doubles and helped the Toreros go undefeated in WCC play and win their second WCC Tournament in the past four years.

Spinosa was named Male Torero of the Year (along with quarterback Mason Mills) and tied a school record with 100 career singles victories.

Spinosa becomes the first Torero to win this award since 2000 (Susan Erpelding) and the first male to earn this honor since 1995 (Jacob Slania).

The Mike Gilleran WCC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award recognizes the finest accomplishments in athletics, academics, and community service by individuals who have completed their collegiate eligibility. The award was re-named in honor of the conference's first full-time Commissioner, Mike Gilleran, who retired after 24 years of service to the WCC.
