SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego men's tennis team received a letter of intent from Rancho Santa Fe's JP Boyd this past week. The local product is a five-star recruit and USD head coach Brett Masi's first signee of the 2012 class.
"This is a big day for USD tennis," said Masi. "To get such a great player and from our own back yard is huge. Getting Southern California kids, let alone a San Diego kid, was a huge priority for this staff when I came here and signing JP will mean so much for this program for years to come. He is another great addition to building this program and I know how excited he is to be a Torero and be a part of this family."
As of November 8th, Boyd was ranked No. 52 for the class of 2012 in the national recruiting rankings, according to www.tennisrecruiting.net, as well as being ranked No. 10 in the Southwest Region and No. 7 in the state of California. He currently holds a No. 91 national singles ranking and has been ranked in the top-10 in Southern California since he was 14, including a No. 2 ranking in San Diego this year.
Boyd was also seriously considering California, San Diego State and USC, among others.
"I realized how awesome USD is and how awesome the city of San Diego is to live in," Boyd told www.tennisrecruiting.net after signing. "I never really had it in my mind at first, but once I looked into it I knew I couldn't really leave. USD has the atmosphere of a national championship team right next to my house."
Among his junior tournament accomplishments, he won both the Esme Pearson and Maureen Connolly championships and was a semifinalist at the Orange County Championships and SoCal Sectionals, where he took third place, as well as a quarterfinalist in the Tucson Regional of the National Open. Boyd was also a doubles finalist at the National Open.
In the boy's 16s division, he won the West Coast Championships and the No Quit National Doubles, while also helping his team win the SoCal Zone team championship. In addition, he won the Winter Nationals Sportsmanship Award as well.
Boyd, who will graduate from Torrey Pines High School this spring, has spent the last two years working on his tennis game while he completing his coursework in an untraditional school setting. He competed at Torrey Pines High as a freshman as well.
Off the court, Boyd is a Member of the National Society of High School Scholars and the Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth. He plans on majoring in pre-med at USD.
