BREA, Calif. - San Diego brought the heat to Orange County this morning as the men's and women' s cross country teams began their seasons at the Mark Covert Classic "Season Opener" hosted by CSU Fullerton at Carbon Canyon Park. After two hard weeks of preseason training camp the men's and women's squads were ready to get out and race.

The day began with an early wake up call in San Diego, and the gun went off for the men's 8K race at 8:40. The incoming freshmen had a strong showing, taking the top five spots on the men's team. Matt Beasley led the Toreros, finishing in 26:45, followed closely by Adam Bodine in 26:53. Chris Spinney, Spencer Hoffman, and Matt Smith rounded out the top five.

The women's team demonstrated excellent pack running with only a minute spread between the scoring five. Sophomore Sydney Olagaray led the team finishing with a time of 19:40. Freshmen Claire Miller completed her first collegiate race in 20:21, coming in second for the Toreros. Sophomores Olivia Houser, sophomore Dani LeMieux, and freshman Sarah Kapple completed the top five.

The MVPs of the day were junior Neil Martin who finished in 28:28 and sophomore Sydney Olagaray. Neil demonstrated perseverance in his race by continuing to move up throughout the race, and pushing his teammates. Sydney led the women's team for the entire race, stepping up as a leader and proving that she is ready for a great season.

The Toreros return to action on Sept. 14 at the West Coast Invite in Malibu, Calif.
