SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The Torero cross-country team hosted the USD Invite Saturday morning at Tecolote Shores at Mission Bay, with both the men's and women's finishing in third place.
Stanford won both events. They had four women tie for first and on the men's side had all five of their runners finish in the top six. UC San Diego's Aren Johnson finished first in the men's 8k with a time of 25:20.
"Overall I'm very pleased. Both races were very competitive," Head Coach Will Guarino said after the meet. "We put on a great meet at a phenomenal location and had great weather. You couldn't ask for a better cross-country environment. To have Stanford here, the No. 2 women's team and the No. 5 men's team in the nation is a blessing."
The women's team's top five runners all finished in the top 14, finishing with a team score of 48, just behind UC San Diego's 47.
"On the women's side, we have a very young team and they took some risks today," Guarino explained. "They ran the last kilometer really strong and started believed. It is a work in progress, but they are a great group of people to work with."
Rasmussen, a freshman from Maineville, Ohio, impressed in her collegiate debut.
"Hannah Rasmussen, who had a ligament tear just over 90 days ago, is all of a sudden running number one for us today," Guarino stated. "That is a miracle within itself but also is a tribute to her character. The pain she went through 90 days ago was not even close to what she went through today. To see her respond like that was amazing."
"Senior Julie Giannini was the captain of the ship and she taught a lot of the young runners to evolve and move," Guarino prasied.
The men were led by the senior duo of Pedrotti (9th; 25:48) and Liam Burke (10th; 25:54).
"The support we had from other USD teams such as volleyball , soccer, and rowing. That type of team spirit helped our runners be up front and go attack a very strong team like Stanford," Coach Guarino explained after the race.
In two weeks, the Toreros will compete in the Rim Rock Classic in Lawrence, Kansas.
