MALIBU, Calif. - The Toreros men and women's cross country teams traveled to Malibu Friday afternoon to race at the West Coast Invite. The invite, hosted by Pepperdine University, is a preview for the West Coast Conference Championships in November. The team now knows what to train for and what to expect when the big race comes in early November.

After a team pasta dinner and an early bed time, the team was fueled up and ready to race. The woman's race began at 9:00 am and the men's at 10:00 am. Senior Gillian Gorelik had a fantastic race and finished first for the women's team with a 6k time of 22:11.40 placing 11th, followed by freshman Andrea Hughes and sophomore Ashton Padberg. The leader for the men's team in the 8k was freshman Matt Beasley with a time of 25:40.20 placing 15th. Freshmen Ryan Lesansee, Matt Smith, Chris Spinney, and Spencer Hoffman also finished in the top 5 for the Toreros. Both teams finished in 5th place.

"The Women raced well today," said Head Coach Will Guarino. "I was pleased with their performance for the top 3 girls ran top 10 all times ever for USD on a 6km course. Our opportunity will be narrowing the gap between our 4th and 5th runners closer to our top 1,2,3 runners. We have a batch of girls that can step up to fill that void, and we will continue working on that during our training."

The Men also had a standout race for the new freshmen class pulled USD through taking the top 5 spots for the 2nd race in a row.

"We made some fundamental mistakes on the 2nd half of the race. This was disappointing, but nevertheless this is the period to learn from your bumps for it is a very young team that is learning how to race the 8km race."

USD now will focus on training for their next competition at the Stanford Invite, in Palo Alto, California on September 28, 2013.
