SAN DIEGO, Calif. --
Racing on their home course at Mission Bay, the USD women's cross-country team took sixth place at the WCC Championships, improving from their seventh place finish a season ago. The Torero men finished in ninth place.

Andrea Hughes led the women's team, finishing the 6k in 22:21.6. Liam Burke was the top Torero finisher for the men's team, crossing the finish line in 25:44.8 in the 8k.

"The key was our seniors," Head Coach Guarino said about the women's team. "When you have seniors that really want it, who provide great leadership and instill a sense of pride and tradition in the university and the team, that makes a huge difference."

Finishing behind Hughes was freshman Cassidy Kuhn, who had a career high finish amongst USD runners. Her time of 22:29.5 was good for 32nd place.

"Cassidy has a tremendous amount of heart, passion and tenacity and has a great vision of what she wants in the future," Guarino said. "She was groomed by the seniors. They did a very good job from week one of our training to make sure she bought in to what we are trying to do."

Right behind Kuhn was senior Lindsay Benster (22:46.8) for 34th place. Ashley Mitchell (44th; 23:15.7) and Natalie North-Cole (50th; 23:32.6) rounded out the top five for USD.

For the men, Burke finished in 32nd place, finishing with the top Torero time for the second time this season. Max Pedrotti, who broke the school record two weeks ago finished in 49th place with a time of 26:34.5.

"Liam was a beast today," Guarino said. "Liam and Max are great training partners. What one does sometimes the other the other picks up. I'm proud of Max. He didn't have his day, but obviously has had his day two weeks ago."

Behind Pedrotti was TJ Hodges (54th; 26:45.0), Mitch Manis (62nd; 7:28.6), and Patrick Bruce (65th; 27:41.5).

The Toreros wrap up the season November 11 when they compete at the NCAA West Regionals in Sacramento, Calif.
