LA JOLLA, Calif. -Team Runner of the week honors go to senior Chris Jacobs for his competitive spirit on senior day at the Triton Invitational. Jacobs shattered his personal best as well as the school record in the 800 meter run over the weekend.
"It is difficult to not overlook the fact that Chris Jacobs shattered his own school record in the 800 meter run," commented head coach Will Guarino. "He had a trifecta; personal best, school record, and took the gold in his heat."
Jacobs ran an excellent 800 meter race, setting himself at 1:25 for the 600 meter. He fought down the stretch and out-leaned his competitor at the line for the win.
He followed that race with the will of a champion by competing in the 5000 meter and finished with a time of 15:51.
Senior Mark Hubbard finished third place in his heat with a 53.72 mark in the 400 meter dash. He also took third place in his 800 meter run heat with a time of 2:04.79.
John Maheu also had an outstanding day by closing with a personal best of 16:18 in the 5000 meter.
"[John] brought his time down significantly and also looks 100% and fully recovered from his knee injury," commented Guarino.
Maheu also ran the 800 meter and placed 4th in his heat with a time of 2:03.56.
"What is most impressive about John is the way he maintained his form during both races, his hand motion has improved which makes him more of an efficient runner," said Guarino.
The Toreros finish up the season at the Occidental College Track Meet on Saturday, May 9 at 3:00 p.m. in Eagle Rock, California.
