The women's team huddles up to talk last minute pre-race strategy at Malibu Oceanside Open
Sept. 2, 2010
Malibu, Calif. - The USD Torero distance squads completed their first day of competition at Alumni Park on the campus of Pepperdine University. It was a humbling day for the Torero squad given the results of the race.
The Men kicked off the race and ran a strong first half of the race. They pushed the pace and challenged the wave runners very well. The advantage of knowing your home course paid off for the Pepperdine runners on the 2nd half of the race. They moved up on our guys and attacked the critical hills when they were supposed to and it made the difference on the outcome.
The Women's race shortly followed, and the results were similar in the outcome. Nevertheless, many of the women moved up aggressively on the 2nd half of the race.
"Our goal was to come out and compete and measure the racing depth of both of our teams" said Coach Guarino. "One must hand it to both Pepperdine and Cal State Bakersfield for their results. Our focus is the Conference and the NCAA Regional race. We just completed the most rigorous two weeks of pre-season training camp that we have ever had at USD and it caught up to us. This team understood that going into the race and know that the aim is 59 days away at the Conference Championship and some critical benchmarks that we must be hit along the way."
The team will re-focus on training and will also prepare to race at the Aztec Invite on Saturday, September 18, 2010.
