Toreros Hold off Pilots for First WCC Win

PORTLAND, Ore. - Behind Katelyn McDaniel's first career double-double and three other Toreros scoring in double figures, the University of San Diego women's basketball team (9-5, 1-1 WCC) picked up their first West Coast Conference win of the season with a 69-63 victory over the University of Portland (5-10, 0-2 WCC).

McDaniel recorded her double-double with 15 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field, and she pulled down 11 rebounds. Amy Kame led all scorers with 19 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field, while also going a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe. Klara Wischer had a near double-double, as she recorded 16 points and pulled down nine boards, while Maya Hood recorded 10 points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field. As a team, USD shot .435, and out rebounded the Pilots 44-32.

In the first half, the first few minutes was a back and forth affair, as both teams took their turn with the lead and neither team had a lead bigger than two. Then with the score at 6-4 in favor of USD, a Kame lay-up sparked a 10-2 Torero run to give USD the momentum and a 10-point lead at 16-6 with 14:17 to go. The two teams would then begin to trade basket-for-basket for the reminder of the half, with USD maintaining a 6-10 point lead, and the Toreros would eventually go into the break up nine at 34-25.

In the second half, Portland opened the frame on an 8-0 run to pull back to within one at 34-33 with 18:16 to go. USD then put together an 11-5 run to regain control of the momentum and build up a seven-point lead at 45-38 with 13:30 to go on a McDaniel lay-up.

The Pilots would then manage to stay close to the Toreros for the remainder of the frame, and eventually pulled back to within two at 63-61 with 4:06 to go. Both teams then went cold from the field and with 54 seconds remaining, Wischer hit a lay-up to give USD a four-point lead. The Toreros then proceeded to hit four free throws down the stretch to hold on a claim the win.

 

 

USD will return to action on Thursday, when they host Brigham Young University in a 7 p.m. WCC game inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion.
