Jan. 8, 2006
(San Diego, CA) - The visiting Pepperdine Waves (4-11, 1-1 WCC), behind a big offensive first half, cruised to an 84-61 victory over the host USD Toreros (5-10; 0-2 WCC). Pepperdine shot 71.4% from the field in the first 20 minutes in taking a 55-24 intermission lead. The Waves made 20-of-28 shots from the field and 6-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc. USD played much better in the second half, outscoring the Waves 37-29, but it was just too big a deficit to overcome. Pepperdine's Daphanie Kennedy led four teammates in double figures with 22 points. USD was paced by Sabine Loewe (14 points, 8 rebounds), Kelly Winther (13 points) and Kaila Mangrum (10 points).
In the first half Pepperdine jumped out to an 8-0 lead and never looked back. With just under 12 minutes left in the period USD was still within nine at 18-9 on a Loewe layup, but the Waves crashed down hard on the Toreros over the next 11 minutes, outscoring USD 37-15. By halftime Kennedy had already scored 17 points, with Sherriel Boyd totaling 15.
For the game USD struggled from the field making just 21-of-60 shots (35%), and 3-of-17 three-point attempts. USD's defense put the clamps on Pepperdine in the 2nd half, limiting them to just 23.1% shooting (6-26). The Waves made their first 25 free throw attempts in the game before settling with 26-27 for the game. Pepperdine also held the edge in rebounding (37-31).
San Diego hits the road for three games beginning with Santa Clara on January 14th.
