Toreros Undone by Hot-Shooting Pacific
Jan. 11, 2018

Final Stats

SAN DIEGO - Maya Hood scored a season-high 24 points but it was not quite enough to stop a hot-shooting Pacific team as San Diego fell, 81-68, Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion.

The Toreros (9-7, 2-3 WCC) cut an early 15-point deficit to 65-64 with 6:40 to play but could not complete the comeback, as the Tigers (7-9, 1-4 WCC) closed the game on a 16-4 run to seal the victory.

The Toreros shot 39.3 percent from the field but could not slow down the Tigers which went 29 for 50 (58 percent) from the field and 5 for 10 (50 percent) from three-point range.

San Diego had four players score in double-digits. Along with Hood, Ana Ramos and Sydney Williams chipped in 11 points apiece, while Aubrey Ward-El added 11. Ramos’ 11 points is a career high. Hood pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.

The Toreros fell behind early when the Tigers jumped out to a 12-4 advantage to start the game. USD battled back and Ward-El capped the quarter with a jumper to cut the Toreros deficit to 22-15.

Pacific shot 72.7 percent from the field in the second quarter but could not pull away from the Toreros, which kept pace with the Tigers being outscored by only two points in the quarter, 19-17. Pacific took a 41-32 advantage into halftime.

The Toreros continued to chip away in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 23-21 and cutting its deficit to 62-55 entering the final quarter.

Back-to-back three pointers by Ramos cut Pacific’s lead to 65-62 and a layup by Hood a minute and a half later made it a one-point game with 5:13 to play. However, the Tigers closed on a 16-4 run to seal the victory.

The Toreros will look to get back on track Saturday at 2 p.m. PT when they travel to LMU.
