SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Behind a double-double from sophomore forward Katelyn McDaniel, the University of San Diego women's basketball team (10-6, 2-2 WCC) battled past a late game scare, beating the Loyola Marymount University (7-10, 1-3 WCC) Lions in overtime, 88-78, at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.

With 12 seconds left in regulation and LMU down 70-73, the Lions inbounded the ball and brought it down the court to throw up a quick three, but Lions guard Danielle Pruitt was fouled on her shot attempt.

Despite the pressure, Pruitt kept her poise and drained all three foul shots, tying the score at 73. Then with just 2 seconds remaining, Klara Wischer launched a 3/4 court shot and the ball rimed out at the buzzer, as they two teams would then head to overtime.

In the overtime period, Hazel Ramirez scored the first point on the back-end of a pair of free throws for LMU, but a Felicia Wijenberg lay-up then ignited a 11-0 San Diego run over the next four minutes to give the Toreros a 10-point lead at 84-74 with 49 seconds left. The Toreros never looked back, as they then cruised their way to the 88-78 victory.

At the first half tip, the Lions forced an up-tempo style of play that kept the Toreros on their heels. After a quick series of back and forth baskets, LMU hit the gas and went on an 11-2 run over three minutes, bringing the score to 17-8, with 14:39 left in the first period.

The Toreros fought back and responded with a dominant 15-2 run of their own, leading 23-19 with 7:22 left before halftime.

LMU managed to find its footing and started to take back offensive control.

With the Lions up by four and less than 30 seconds on the clock, USD forward Klara Wischer hit a jumper and Alysse Barlow stole the ensuing inbound pass and laid it up, tying the game at 35 before the halftime buzzer.

Coming out of the locker room, the Lions took control of the second half, forcing a 48-40 lead with 15:48 left in the game.

But like the first half, the Toreros rallied, forcing nine consecutive points on the scoreboard to take the lead with 13:11 on the clock.

The Lions were forced to start fouling with 15 seconds remaining, but USD forward Katelyn McDaniel hit only one of two from the line.
