PROVO, Utah - The University of San Diego women's basketball team finished its regular-season with a 71-58 loss to Brigham Young University Saturday afternoon at the Marriott Center.
With the loss, the Toreros conclude the regular-season with a 22-7 overall and 11-7 in the WCC. With the win, the Cougars move to 23-5 and 14-4 in the WCC. The Toreros will receive the No. 5 seed in the upcoming WCC Tournament, while BYU has secured the No. 2 seed.
Amy Kame paced the Toreros offense with 16 points on 7-of-15 shooting from the field while dishing out four assists and recoding three steals. Malina Hood was the only other Torero in double figures, as she had 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting from the field. USD shot 43.6% from the field, and were out rebounded 39-24.
In the first half, the Toreros opened up the frame on a 6-0 run over the first 2:36 of action. However, this was short lived, as the Cougars answered with a 17-2 run over the next seven minutes of action to take a 17-8 lead with 10:29 to go. The two teams would then begin to trade baskets over the next several minutes, until the Cougars closed the frame on a 10-2 run to take a 39-22 lead into halftime.
In the second half, BYU quickly pushed their lead to 17 on a Kim Beeston jumper with 17:49 to go. A little over a minute later, Hood drilled a 3-pointer to spark a 13-4 Torero run pulling San Diego to within eight at 48-40 with 12:15 to go. The Toreros began to trade baskets with the Cougars over the next several minutes, but were unable to get the deficit down to single digits for the reminder of the game.
