( San Diego, CA) - The USD women's basketball program is heading to the Sweet Sixteen of the WNIT after today's 83-75 home victory over the Pacific Tigers. The USD senior tandem of Morgan Woodrow (27 points) and Dominique Conners (23 points) was just too much for UOP who finish with a record of 18-14. The 24-8 Toreros will now head to Lubbock, Texas where they will take on the Texas Tech Lady Raiders on Thursday, March 22nd, in a 5:00 p.m. (PT) contest at United Spirit Arena. Texas Tech advanced with today's 69-55 win over Tulane.
"I am just so happy for the team. They worked so hard and put so much time and effort into the season and continue to believe, and continue to work hard," stated head coach Cindy Fisher. "Once again I have to go back to my seniors, Morgan Woodrow shows up and has a huge game, when she has been struggling lately, Dominique Conners again puts this team on her back and Izzy Chilcott does the little things that makes such a big difference. As long as the seniors want to keep playing we will keep playing."
For the second straight game the Toreros reached double-digit leads only to see the visitors fight back and get within striking distance. Each time this happened the Toreros were able to find answer and gain back their momentum. After taking a 42-32 lead into the locker room at the break, USD extended their lead to as many as 16 on two different occasions with the last coming at 64-48 with 9:02 to go on a Sophia Ederaine layup.
Over the next 6 1/2 minutes the Tigers went on a 17-6 run to pull to within 5 points at 70-65 with 2:40 to go on a layup from Christina Thompson. Once again it was Conners and Woodrow that came up with the big play of the game as Conners fed Woodrow with a beautiful pass up court and Woodrow converted the layup for a 7 point cushion. That would be as close as the UOP Tigers would get as Woodrow would score 10 of her game-high 27 points in the final 2:40 of the game.
Free throws played a key role in the outcome of today's contest as USD converted 33-of-49 attempts, while the UOP Tigers cashed in on 16-of-21. Amy Kame also reached double figures for USD with 10 points while Klara Wischer came off the bench to chip in with 8 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
UOP had three players in double figures with Ashley Wakefield leading the charge off the bench with 24 points. She was followed by forward Kendall Rodriguez (19 points) and guard Erica McKenzie (10 points).
USD and Texas Tech played earlier this season in the Maggie Dixon Surf `N Slam at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on December 30th and Texas Tech escaped with a 58-57 win. Texas Tech leads the all-time series with USD, 4-0.
