SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's basketball team (21-8) has learned that they will host the first round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Thursday. USD's first-round opponent will be the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos and the game time and ticket information will be released on Wednesday.
"We are very excited to host the first round of the WNIT against UC Santa Barbara. To be able to stay in San Diego and host a quality opponent is exciting for both the city and for the university," said head coach Cindy Fisher. "This is a giant step in the right direction for our program and I hope we can get a great crowd out for the game on Thursday to cheer us on."
The Gauchos enter the contest with a 17-13 overall record and a second place finish in the Big West Conference. UCSB made it to the championship game of the Big West tournament, but fell to the conference regular-season champion UC Riverside 70-67. Jenna Green, who averages a team-best 16.5 ppg to go along with 7.2 rebounds per game, leads Santa Barbara offensively. Jessica Wilson (13.0 ppg) and Chisa Ononiwu (12.5 ppg) are the only other UCSB players averaging double figures.
The Toreros have just finished the best turn around in program history, a 12-game improvement from 9-19 in the 2005-06 season to a 21-8 record this season. USD has set a lot of records along the way as they have recorded the first-ever 20-win season in program history, finished second place in the West Coast Conference for the first time in program history and had the best overall start in program history at 6-0 and in conference play at 6-0. These are just a few of the team highlights this season.
