2013 WNIT Bracket
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -The University of San Diego women's basketball team has learned they will host the first round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament on Thursday inside the friendly confines of the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Tip off is set for 6 p.m.
"I feel great about being in the postseason. I think we are fortunate to still be playing, and am excited to get this young team some more playing experience," stated head coach Cindy Fisher. "At this moment, we don't know too much about Hawaii, but our staff is working hard tonight, and we will know a lot more about them in the next 12 hours."
This marks the second consecutive WNIT appearance for the Toreros, and third appearance in the WNIT in program history. USD has posted a record of 4-2 in WNIT games, having reached as far as the Final Four last season, before falling to eventual WNIT champion Oklahoma State.
San Diego is coming off their second consecutive 20-win season, as the Toreros finished the 2012-13 regular-season with a 21-9 overall record, tying the second best record in program history. The Toreros are 0-4 all-time against Hawaii. San Diego is paced offensively by All-WCC first-team selection Amy Kame, who is averaging 15.9 ppg, while leading the team in assists with 117 and steals with 75. All-WCC honorable mention honoree Katelyn McDaniel (10.5 ppg) and WCC Newcomer of the Year Maya Hood(10.4 ppg) are the two other Toreros averaging double figures.
Hawaii enters the game with an overall record of 17-13 after being eliminated from the Big West Conference Tournament by Cal State Fullerton. Kamilah Martin paces the team's offense with an average of 15.4 ppg, while shooting .321 from the field. The next highest scorer for Rainbow Wahine is Ashleigh Karaitiana, who is scoring 8.6 ppg. The Rainbow Wahine finished tied for second in the Big West Conference, and received the No. 3 seed in the BWC Tournament. This is the first time in 10 years that the Rainbow Wahine have advanced to the post-season.
The winner of this game will face the winner of the Long Beach State and Utah game, that will be played on Wednesday at LBSU's Pyramid.
About the 2013 WNIT
The Women's National Invitation Tournament consists of 64 Division I women's basketball teams who compete at participating schools including the semifinals and the championships. Every round is single elimination. This year's field features 36 teams with 20 or more wins.
First-round action tips off on Wednesday, March 20 and concludes on Friday, March 22. Second-round games begin March 23-25, round three March 27-29, quarterfinals March 30-April 1, and semifinals April 3-4. The championship game will be played on Saturday, April 6 and will be televised live and in HD at 3 p.m. EDT on CBS Sports Network. All games are hosted by participating schools.
