Friday vs. San Diego Christian 6:00 p.m. Tickets Live Stats

TIP OFF: The Toreros kick off their 2017-18 regular season Friday evening when they host San Diego Christian for a throwback game inside the USD Sports Center Gym.

FLASHBACK FRIDAY: Friday’s game will be played in the USD Sports Center Gym, the Toreros’ home up until the 2000-01 season. It’s 80’s Night and any fan dressed in 80’s gear will be entered to win gift cards. Fans are encouraged to enter campus through the east entrance and park in the Vistas parking lot and go through the Sports Center pool gates. Ticket sales and access to the court will be at the gym entrance facing the pool. If you do chose to park in the Mission Parking structure, there will be a tram running to and from the Sports Center gym before and after the game.

LAST TIME OUT: The Toreros defeated Biola 79-58 in an exhibition contest inside the Jenny Craig Pavilion Tuesday evening. USD had 11 players score, led by Aubrey Ward El’s 19 points (8-for-14). Joining Ward-El in double-digits was Caroline Buhr and Sydney Williams, who each chipped in 14 points. Buhr added a game-high eight rebounds. In her first career start, Alexandra Hagen had eight points and seven rebounds. The Toreros shot 50 percent from the floor while holding Biola to 38.5 percent. USD had a commanding lead on the glass, hauling in 47 rebounds to the Eagles’ 24. The Toreros also did a great job distributing the ball; recording 20 assists on their 32 field goals

SCOUTING THE HAWKS: San Diego Christian already has two games under their belt, earning decisive wins over Saint Katherine (77-40) and La Sierra (80-49)… Danna Robles and Anessa Wolfblack have scored double-digit points in both of the Hawks’ games so far… The Hawks are coached by Shawn Chaffin, who is in his first year at SDCC after spending the last six years at Minot State as an assistant coach… This is the first regular season meeting between these two schools. They played an exhibition game before the 2015-16 season, a 90-37 Torero win.

BACK FOR MORE: Maya Hood, a graduate student, will be entering her sixth season with the Toreros and was named to the preseason All-WCC Team. Through nine games last year she was averaging 18.1 points, 8.1 rebounds and shooting 57.5 percent from the field. Hood enters the season in the top ten all-time in multiple categories including first in career offensive rebounds (356) and seventh in career points (1,301).

FRESH FACES: The coaching staff has been very impressed with their four newcomers, which includes three freshmen and a transfer. Freshmen Myah Pace (5-11, Oakland Calif.) and Sydney Hunter (6-0, Keizer, Ore.) will give the Toreros versatility on the perimeter. Freshman Kendall Bird (6-2, Buckley, Wash) and sophomore Kat Olczak (6-7, Zielona Gora, Poland), a transfer from Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, will provide depth and toughness in the Toreros' frontcourt.

THE FUTURE IS BRIGHT: The Toreros signed two players to NLI’s during the early signing period on Wednesday, securing commitments from Kiera Oakry and Nicole Blakes. Oakry, a 5’10” guard from nearby La Jolla Country Day, is a three-time all-league selection and will bring athleticism and versatility to USD. Blakes is a 6’2” forward from Archbishop Mitty, a powerhouse in the Bay Area. She has helped her team go undefeated in league the past two seasons and will add speed, length and versatility to the Toreros’ post rotation.

SCHEDULING UP: The Toreros’ 2017-18 schedule features ten games against teams who appeared in either the 2017 NCAA or WNIT postseason tournament. The Toreros play an extremely competitive non-conference schedule highlighted by games against San Diego State, California and Minnesota in addition to matchups against Boise State and Hawai’i in Honolulu. “This is one of the toughest non-conference schedules we have put together to date,” Coach Fisher said. "It is going to challenge us from start to finish.”

PRESEASON POLL: The Toreros were picked to finish fourth in the WCC preseason poll. Gonzaga (26-7, 14-4) claimed 79 points to finish atop the preseason poll after claiming the double in 2017 with a WCC regular season and championship crown. Saint Mary's (20-13, 13-5) received the other two first place votes and was the preseason pick to finish second in the conference with 72 points. The Gaels were followed by BYU (20-12, 13-5) in third with 68 points. Behind the Toreros (54 points) was Loyola Marymount (14-16, 9-9), with 48 points. The Lions welcome a heralded transfer for the second consecutive season with junior Gabby Green eligible to compete following two years as a starter for California. Three points separated the sixth and seventh spots on the poll between a pair of teams with head coaches entering their second seasons with their respective programs. Santa Clara (14-16, 9-9) was selected sixth with 39 points while San Francisco (18-13, 11-7) was picked seventh with 36 points. Pacific claimed eighth overall with 28 points after going 10-21 (5-13) last season. Pepperdine and Portland round out the preseason poll with the Waves, under first-year head coach DeLisha Milton-Jones, collecting 14 points for ninth and the Pilots. The Waves went 7-23 (5-13 WCC) last season, and the Pilots quadrupled their conference record from the previous season with a 6-24 (4-14) WCC) mark.
