USD Shows Strength at WCC Challenge

March 24, 2004

(Redwood Shores, CA) - Loyola Marymount, Gonzaga, San Diego, Santa Clara, St. Mary's and Portland, who finished in that order, all met last weekend in Redwood City, racing head-to-head on the best 2 lane race course in the country. A bridge at the halfway point allowed spectators to watch from above. Flat water, no motorboats, negligible currents and only slight winds made for a dream race weekend.

USD's Varsity boat jumped out to a half boat length lead on Gonzaga in the fiercely contested rivalry, but let their advantage slip away at the 1000-meter mark, the Toreros finished a mere 7 seconds behind.

"Now we know we have some boat speed. We just need to tweak our training program, by focusing on the 2nd half of the race over these next 6 weeks before the WCC Championships, if we plan on taking a little bit out of the Bulldogs, " said USD Head Coach Doug Thiemann.

Santa Clara and Portland fell short in their challenge to topple USD's Varsity, this raised the Torero's in league record to 3-1. During the warm-up for the LMU/USD JV dual, LMU and the Santa Clara men collided. After borrowing a replacement shell, LMU was out for blood and took it out on the USD JV with an 11 second margin of victory. Thiemann said, "The "thirst for first" is strong in the JV boat and they might get a sip of victory this weekend at the Berg Cup Regatta in Newport."

The Novice boat outpaced WCC member, Santa Clara, by 14 seconds on Sunday, after beating the lightweight crew from Stanford by 20 seconds the day before. On Saturday as well, the USD Varsity Lwt's challenged Stanford's Varsity Lwt's to one of the closest races of the weekend. After giving up some ground in the middle of the race, the Toreros regained ground in the last 300 meters of the race, but fell short by about 8 seats. USD's 2nd Novice boat was victorious over Stanford's 1st Novice Lwt. boat, but was out paced by Santa Clara's 1st Novice boat.
