AUSTIN, Texas - The USD women's rowing team is faring well during their 2011 extended road trip through the Midwest as they picked up four more victories at the 2011 Longhorn Invitational in Austin.
The Longhorn Invitational is a 2,000 meter dual-style race held annually on Lady Bird Lake. Texas and the seven other crews are competing in head-to-head races in each race of the weekend. The Toreros faced the University of Central Florida in the morning session followed by the Iowa Hawkeyes in the afternoon session.
In the morning session the Toreros went 3-for-4 on race victories. The Torero Novice 8 boat took a nine second victory over the Golden Knights with a 7:43.8 result. In the Varsity 4 race, the Toreros had a set-back taking second behind Central Florida finishing in 8:20.2. The 2nd Varsity 8 boat bounced with a win a close win finishing in 7:19.9. The Varsity 8 boat also had a close race ending with a win finishing at 7:08.2.
The evening session brought heavy head winds as the Toreros faced off against Iowa. In the Novice 8 boat, San Diego recorded a 8:29.5 mark finishing behind Iowa. The Toreros Varsity 4 boat picked up the win with a 9:13.6, 16 seconds ahead of Iowa. The 2nd Varsity 8 boat was 10 seconds off the first place finish with a time of 8:00.4 while the Varsity 8 boat finished behind the Hawkeyes with a time of 7:40.5.
The Toreros return to the race course for the Sunday morning session where they will face off against host University of Texas.
