Toreros Place Two Boats in Sunday's Grand Final
April 2, 2016

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Competing on their home waters of Mission Bay, the USD women's rowing team had four strong performances in the first day of the annual Crew Classic.

The Toreros' V8+ kicked off the event with an impressive performance in the Jessop-Whittier Invitational. Their time of 6:43.624 will place them in Sunday's Grand Final and was faster than ranked teams such as No. 11 Washington State (6:44.302) and WCC rival No. 18 Gonzaga (6:46.76).

"We really want to prove that we belong in the top 20 in the country, and that we are performing well and are on par with those top teams in the country," Head Coach Kim Cupini said. "I think the eight's performance today definitely shows that."

The Toreros will be in the outside lane for the 10:00 a.m. Grand Final Sunday and will have a chance to show their speed against seven other ranked crews.

"It would definitely show the country how we've been feeling this entire season," Uche Anywanu of the V8 said after the race. "That we are the underdogs, but we have a lot of speed and a lot to build on. We've been working really hard and we hope tomorrow we can show everyone how fast USD really is."

The USD V4+ immediately followed that up with a time of 7:40.649. Out of the 15 schools competing across three heats, the Toreros had the fifth fastest time, beating No. 20 UCLA (7:44.344) by nearly four seconds and No. 18 Gonzaga (7:52.321) by over 11 seconds.

The Toreros' 2V8 had a fast time, but was unfortunately placed in the toughest heat, where they finished third (top two boats advance). Their time of 6:54.483 would have placed first or second if USD raced in a different heat. Their time bested No. 18 Gonzaga (6:55.936), No. 20 UCLA (6:58.164), No. 14 USC (6:58.275), and No. 11 Washington State (6:59.439) amongst others. The 2V8 will compete in the Petite Final in lane one on Sunday at 8:24 a.m.

In the final race of the day, the USD Novice 8 clocked in at 7:49.507, good for fifth place in their heat.
