CLEMSON, S.C. – Going up against some of the nation’s top crews, the Toreros had a strong showing in the first day of the Clemson Invite. USD’s V8+ beat No. 17 Harvard-Radcliffe to begin the day and posted impressive times throughout the day.
The Toreros, who entered the weekend just outside the Top 20 rankings, competed against five ranked schools in the morning session. They kicked off the morning with the V8+ finishing in fourth place in their race. The Toreros finished in 6:51.8, ahead of No. 17 Harvard-Radcliffe (6:55.2) and Oregon State (6:59.3).
In the afternoon session, the Toreros were pitted against three ranked schools, including two of the nation’s top five; No. 3 Virginia and No. 4 Ohio State. It was the strongest field of all the afternoon races. They took fourth place in every race, posting some impressive times and beating Cornell and Michigan State in every race.
“This afternoon it was good to see the team get much more adjusted and have better racing against the top three programs attending,” Head Coach Kim Cupini said after the races. “The speed of that race was exciting to watch. We are looking forward to the racing tomorrow in hopes that we can continue to improve results against the strong competition.”
The Toreros finished the first day with their V8+ (6:27.8) only four seconds off of No. 8 Texas (6:23.7). This race posted the most impressive times of the day and with just eight minute centers separating the races, the Toreros proved their speed.
The 2V8+ also claimed fourth place, clocking in with an impressive time of 6:47.7.
The V4+ had an impressive showing against the defending national champions, Ohio State. They finished in 7:31.4, ahead of Cornell (7:42.8) and Michigan State (8:09.3), and just seconds behind No. 4 Ohio State (7:29.3).
USD began the session with their 2V4+ finishing with a time of 7:33.8, about 10 seconds ahead of Cornell and Central Florida. They were just 4 seconds behind No. 8 Texas.
The Toreros wrap up the Clemson Invitational early Sunday morning when they race against No. 4 Ohio State, No. 14 Washington State, No. 17 Harvard-Radcliffe, No. 20 Louisville, and Central Florida. The first race, which features the V8+, begins at 5:30 a.m. PT.
