SAN DIEGO, Calif. - With spring getting into full swing it's time for the 40th annual San Diego Crew Classic to take place on Mission Bay, Saturday, Apr. 6 and Sunday, Apr. 7. The event features many of the nation's top junior, collegiate, and master's crew with two days of racing. For the University of San Diego women's rowing team, it is a chance to compete against a selection of the best crews the NCAA has to offer on their home waters.
This year USD will kickoff the weekend competing for the Cal Cup with their race starting at 8:30 am on Saturday morning. In that race the Toreros' varsity eight will go up against Loyola Marymount, Kansas State, Saint Joseph's, UC Davis, SMU and Bates.
Later on Saturday morning, USD's varsity four will set out for the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup at 9:40 am. The Toreros will race against Washington, USC, Texas, Duke, Kansas State and San Diego State.
Immediately after that, the Toreros' 2V4 will race in the Women's Collegiate 4+ B Final at 9:50 am versus Virginia, USC, Texas, UCLA and San Diego State.
Then, USD's 2V8 will race at 11:10 am for the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy, where the Toreros will meet USC, Washington, Duke, LMU and Bates.
USD's novice eight will hit the water at 11:50 am as they battle for the Laurel V. Korholz Perpetual Trophy. The novice squad will race against UCLA, Washington State, Kansas State, Iowa and Texas.
The Toreros will wrap up the day competing for the Carley Copley Cup in Women's Open A heat at 2:20 pm. In that heat USD's 3V8 will matchup with Cal, Colorado RC, University of British Columbia, UCLA and UC San Diego.
Participants for Sunday's grand finals and petite finals in these events will be determined following the action on Saturday.
This weekend will be a rematch of sorts for the Toreros, who competed against a handful of these crews already this season at the Longhorn Invitational Mar. 22-24 in Austin, TX. The Toreros posted team sweeps over Kansas State and Iowa during that regatta and also clocked the fastest V8 time of any squad (including Oklahoma, Texas, SMU, UCF and Tulsa) on the final day of competition.
The Crew Classic will also give the Toreros a preview of conference foes Gonzaga and LMU before the WCC Championships on May 18 as well as a look at some of the West Coast crews they are likely to face at WIRAs on Apr. 27 and 28.
On Sunday afternoon, the USD women's team will host a BBQ for athletes, family, friends, and supporters at the USD tent.
Visit www.CrewClassic.org for a complete schedule, results and information about the regatta. Live race results/updates will also be available via the official event Twitter feed @crewclassic.
