SAN DIEGO - Amber Michel made a career-high 10 saves but San Diego was unable to keep pace with Texas A&M's offense and dropped a 2-0 decision Sunday afternoon at Torero Stadium.
Michel did well to keep the Toreros (0-2) in the game, making five stops in each half. After permitting an early goal in the 12th minute, Michel kept the Aggies (2-0) off the board until they converted a penalty kick at 64:18.
Two of Michel's best saves came less than eight minutes apart in the first half. In the 25th minute, she turned away a header headed to the top right corner with a fingertip parry.
Michel made another crucial stop in the 33rd minute following a turnover by the defense near the top of the penalty box. A hard shot was headed to the bottom right corner of the goal but Michel was able to get her hand to the ball and pinned it against the inside of the goalpost to keep USD's deficit at 1-0.
The Toreros defense did its best to slow down a potent Texas A&M attack that generated 23 shots and 10 corner kicks. The backline was particularly impressive covering free kicks, winning a majority of the 50-50 balls in the air and sending them away from goal.
USD relied on its counterattack for a majority of its offense and had spells throughout the game when they sustained pressure in the final third. Summer Mason was dangerous on the left wing and used her pace to generate opportunities.

Kelsi Dantu came off the bench and provided quality minutes at striker, regularly making runs to try to break through the back line. Dantu and Maggie Ghotbi led the team with two shots apiece.
The Toreros found themselves in a hole early when Texas A&M's, Haley Pounds, settled a bouncing ball near the top of the 18-yard box. She turned quickly and fired a dipping shot that was just out of Michel's reach and into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Michel kept the Toreros within striking distance with multiple quality saves. USD had opportunities to level the score but had trouble finding the final touch to penetrate the Aggies' defense.
Texas A&M doubled its lead in the 65th minute on a Jimena Lopez penalty kick conversion.
The Toreros continued to press forward but could not cut into the Aggies' lead.
USD will look to bounce back next week as it continues its four-game homestand. The Toreros play host to UCSD on Friday at 7 p.m. (PT) in an exhibition game before welcoming Texas Tech on Sunday at 4 p.m.
