LAWRENCE, Kans. - Behind two goals from senior Taylor Housley, the University of San Diego women's soccer team (5-2-0) knocked off Kansas (3-3-1) 2-0 Friday afternoon in their first match of the Kansas Invitational.
Playing in front of a national audience on ESPN3.com, the Toreros recorded their second shutout of 2013 season.
Taylor Housley scored the first of her two goals in the 21st minute after receiving a beautiful pass from freshman Michaela Dooley. Dooley attracted two defenders while dribbling up the left side and was able to slip a pass to a wide-open Housley for the easy goal.
In the first half, both teams had six shot attempts, with each team putting two on frame, but it was the Toreros who took advantage of their opportunities and took a 1-0 lead in to halftime.
Housley scored her second goal of the day in the fourth minute of the second half corner kick. Senior Kelley McCloskey sent the corner to the near post where freshmen Jacqueline Altschuld flicked a header to the far post, finding Housley for the tap-in.
The Jayhawks applied pressure for the entire second half; 11 of their 17 shot attempts came in the second period. However, Michelle Craft and the Toreros back line stood strong to claim the 2-0 shutout.
Sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Craft (5-2-0) registered eight saves as she recorded her second shutout of the season. Jayhawks keeper Kaitlyn Stroud had three saves but was saddled with the loss.
The Toreros will play their second match of the Kansas Invitational at 7:30 a.m. Sunday morning against Nebraska (3-2-1), who knocked off San Francisco 3-0 earlier in the day.
