SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 21st-ranked University of San Diego women's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 win over visiting UC Riverside Friday evening in a non-conference match at Torero Stadium.
With the win, he Torero improve to 6-2-2 overall and run their unbeaten streak to a season-high eight. With the loss, the Highlanders fall to 4-5-1 overall.
Junior midfielder Christine Mock scored the only goal the Toreros would need in the 42nd minute of action. Ashley Kirk took a free kick for the Toreros, which found the feet of Natalie Vinti, who in turn gave a touch pass to Mock, who then broke between two defenders and punched the ball into the back of the net to give USD the 1-0 lead going into the break.
At the 85:46 mark, the Toreros then doubled their lead as senior striker Jen Mello scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Natalie Garcia was able to find Mello who then hit the one-timer past the Highlander goalkeeper to push the score to 2-0.
USD then put the match completely out of reach in the 88th minute of action. Elissa Magracia fed he ball to a streaking Addie Cartan on the left side of the box, and Cartan then rocketed off a laser strike that flew into the back of the net to put the match at its final of 3-0.
Senior goalkeeper Brittany Cameron recorded her third consecutive shutout as she allowed no goals and recorded one save. Her counterpart, Brittany Goetz, was saddled with the loss for the Highlanders as she allowed three goals and recorded a career-high 16 saves.
The Toreros recorded an season-high 33 shots while the USD defense held the Highlanders to just three shot attempts. San Diego also held a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
San Diego will return to action on Sunday as they host Idaho State in a 1 p.m. non-conference match at Torero Stadium.
