SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego women's soccer team (7-4-0) edged out Long Beach State (6-4-0) 1-0 Monday evening at Torero Stadium. Senior Lauren Dotson scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute as the Toreros earned their fourth shutout of the 2013 season.
In a match where the Toreros had multiple goal-scoring opportunities, they finally found the back of the net late in the second half. In the 79th minute freshman midfielder Rachel Conners played a perfect ball from the top of the box to Dotson's feet. The senior midfielder then launched a rocket off the back post and past Long Beach's Kaci McCain.
In their last match before beginning conference play, the Toreros gave a solid defensive effort against a Long Beach State team that had won six of its last seven matches. Sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Craft (7-4-0) notched seven saves and earned her fourth shutout of the season. The 49ers' keeper Kaci McCain (6-2-0), who had four saves, was saddled with just her second loss of the season.
The Toreros attempted 13 shots to Long Beach's 11, and also held the advantage in corner kicks 6-3.
The Toreros will now have some much deserved rest before opening conference play Thursday October 10 at Santa Clara.
