SAN DIEGO – Amber Michel made seven saves but it was not enough to slow down No. 13 Pepperdine as the Waves earned a 3-0 victory Saturday night at Torero Stadium.
The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Toreros (6-9, 4-1 WCC) and moves Pepperdine (12-2-2, 6-0 WCC) into sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
Michel played well in goal despite permitting three goals. She came off her line well on crosses and made seven saves. She ran into a bit of tough luck on each Pepperdine goal with two being one-on-ones and the third being created due to an unfortunate ricochet.
USD was undone by three Waves first-half goals in a span of less than 13 minutes. Pepperdine’s first two goals by Alex Marmureanu (22’) and Joelle Anderson (32’) were nearly identical.
The Toreros defense was beaten by through-balls that left a Waves striker alone with Michel and able to slip a shot around her from about 20 yards out.
Pepperdine’s Calista Reyes added a third goal when a blocked shot fell to her feet six yards in front of USD’s goal and she tapped it into the net.
The Toreros had their chances, generating eight shots and holding a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks. USD hit the crossbar twice on two corner kick opportunities, first in the 2nd minute then again in the 47th minute.
The Toreros will look to get back on track next weekend when it travels to the Northwest for a pair of contests at Portland and Gonzaga.
