SAN DIEGO – An unfortunate bounce and a late second half goal ended San Diego’s season with a 2-0 defeat at San Francisco on Saturday night at Negoesco Stadium.
It was a tough decision for the Toreros (8-11, 6-3 WCC), which rebounded from a challenging nonconference schedule to finish third in the West Coast Conference after being picked to place seventh in the preseason coaches poll.
There’s plenty to be proud of for USD and first-year head coach Louise Lieberman, which reeled off a four-game winning streak to open conference play including a 2-1 victory at BYU. The Toreros senior class of Courtney Coate, Ally Ocon and Tara Meier helped lead USD to its highest conference finish since 2011 when it tied for first with Pepperdine.
The Toreros were a victim of an unfortunate decisive bounce for the game-winner against the Dons (8-10-2, 4-5 WCC). With 11 seconds remaining in the first half, goalkeeper Amber Michel tried to clear a pass back to her by a defender. Her clearance hit a USF striker who was turning away from the play on the back and ricocheted back into the goal to give USF a 1-0 lead.
It was a tough momentum swing for the Toreros going into the break but USD responded well with a strong start to the second half.
The Toreros had its chances throughout the match, generating seven shots, including four on goal, but could not find the finishing touch to level the score.
The Dons sealed their victory with an 82nd minute strike to double its lead, 2-0.
The future remains bright for the Toreros, which expect to return eight starters and 20 letterwinners in 2018.
