SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior forward Emily Dillon scored the game-winning goal in the 84th minute to give the USD women's soccer team (11-8-0, 4-4-0) a 2-1 win over Saint Mary's (6-13-0, 2-6-0) Thursday evening at Torero stadium. The Toreros fell behind in the 49th minute, but put the pressure on the Gaels for the remainder of the match, eventually finding the back of the net twice.
After a scoreless first half, the Gaels took the lead in the fourth minute of the second frame when Briana Campos scored her seventh goal of the year. Campos, assisted by Melissa Madrid, beat a USD defender and slipped the ball past a diving Michelle Craft to give the Gaels a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Victoria Walker knotted the match at 1-1 when she scored the first goal of her collegiate career. After receiving a pass from senior Lauren Dotson, Walker placed the ball into the left side of the net. Walker ended the match with four shots, three of them on goal.
The Toreros continued to put the pressure on the Gaels putting seven shots on frame in the second half to Saint Mary's one. Senior forward Emily Dillon had multiple goal-scoring opportunities in the final twenty minutes and finally found the back of the net in the 84th minute. Dribbling from the right wing, Dillon launched a left footed rocket from the top of the box into the left side of the goal. It was Dillon's ninth goal of the season and her fifth game winner, which ties a school record.
The Toreros outshot the Gaels 16-6, and put 10 on frame to the Saint Mary's four. The Toreros also had a commanding 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper Michelle Craft recorded three saves and picked up her 11th win of the season. Gaels keeper Kaeli Schmidt had eight saves but was saddled with the loss.
The Toreros will wrap up their 2013 on Saturday when they host Pacific at 1:00 p.m. The five Torero seniors will be honored before the match.
