SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Highlighted by 10 home dates, including five games against West Coast Conference opponents, eight games against teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last year, and one game against the defending national champion UCLA Bruins on the Pac-12 Network, the University of San Diego head women's soccer coach Ada Greenwood announced the team's 2014 schedule.
The Toreros, who posted an overall record of 12-8-0 this past season and just missed making the NCAA Tournament, are primed for a return to the postseason. Greenwood and his staff are confident that this schedule will assist the Toreros in returning to the field of 64 for the first time since they reached the Sweet 16 in 2011.
"We are very excited about the up and coming season," said Greenwood. "We have a very home friendly challenging schedule. I feel we are very equipped to compete for the conference title, and I am looking forward to preseason camp, just two weeks away."
San Diego will open the season inside the friendly confines of Torero Stadium with the USD Tournament. The Toreros will take on NCAA Tournament quarter finalist Georgetown at 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 22, and they will close out the Tournament with a 2:00 p.m. showdown against USC on Aug. 24.
USD then closes out a three-game home stand on Aug. 29 with a 7:30 p.m. match against Elite Eight participant Michigan. San Diego then hits the road for two consecutive weeks, as they head up to UCLA on Aug. 31 for a 5 p.m. match against the defending national champion UCLA Bruins, which will air live on the Pac-12 Network. USD then takes on three consecutive Big West Conference opponents on the road in Long Beach State (9/5), Cal State Northridge (9/7), and UC Irvine (9/12).
San Diego then comes home to begin a six-match home stand on Sept. 19 as they battle cross-town rival San Diego State in a 7:30 p.m. match at Torero Stadium. USD then hosts Oklahoma (9/21) and NCAA Tournament participant Cal State Fullerton (9/28) to close out the non-conference schedule.
USD then opens play in the ever so strong West Coast Conference with the two-time defending champion BYU Cougars at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 28. USD then closes out the 6-match home stand with Gonzaga (10/9) and Portland (10/12).
USD will also host WCC rivals San Francisco (10/23) and Santa Clara (10/26), while playing road contests against Pepperdine (10/18), Pacific (10/30), Saint Mary's (11/1), and they close the season at Loyola Marymount on Nov. 8.
