ON THE PITCH: The University of San Diego women's soccer team (0-2-0) will continue its three-match home stand this week, as they take on No. 14 Texas A&M on Wednesday at 7 p.m. USD will then conclude the week with a 5 p.m. match against Minnesota. Both matches will be played inside the friendly confines of Torero Stadium.
LAST TIME OUT: The University of San Diego women's soccer team (0-2-0) dropped a 3-0 decision to Cal State Northridge (2-0-0) Sunday afternoon in a non-conference match at Torero Stadium. The Matadors scored goals in the 17th, 33rd, and 49th minutes to claim the win.
SCOUTING THE AGGIES: Texas A&M enters the week with an overall record of 1-0-0 after defeating UC Irvine this past Monday evening, 2-1. Both Kelley Monogue and Bianca Brinson tallied one goal to give the Aggies a 2-1 victory. USD is 1-0-0 all-time against the Aggies, as they recorded a 5-3 victory on Nov. 17, 2006 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Texas A&M is under the direction of 20th-year head coach G Guerrieri. During his tenure in College Station, Guerrieri has posted an overall record of 320-96-23.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN GOPHERS: Minnesota enters the week with an overall record of 1-1-0 after dropping their season-opener to Florida State, 4-2, and bouncing back with a 2-1 win over No. 24 South Carolina this past weekend. USD is 1-1-0 all-time against the Golden Gophers, with the last meeting coming on Sept. 5, 2010 in Minneapolis, a 2-1 loss for USD. Minnesota's offense is paced by sophomore forward Taylor Uhl, who has scored a pair of goals and added in one assist for five points. Senior goalkeeper Cat Parkhill anchors down the defense, as she is posting a 1.93 goals-against-average.
DILLON NETS FIRST TORERO GOAL: San Diego junior forward Emily Dillon has recorded her first goal as a Torero, after spending the previous two seasons at West Virginia University. Not only was this Dillon's first goal as member of the Toreros, but it was USD's first goal of the season, in the 4-2 loss to No. 10 Pepperdine this past Friday. So far through the first two matches, Dillon is an extremely accurate shot taker, as all three of her shots have been on frame.
GULCZYNSKI SCORES FIRST COLLEGIATE GOAL: Freshman defender Meggie Gulczynski netted her first collegiate goal in Friday's 4-2 loss to No. 10 Pepperdine. Gulczynski was able to re- direct a through ball from sophomore midfielder Olivia Schultz, and booted the ball left-footed to the near post, for her first collegiate goal.
APPROACHING 100: San Diego head coach Ada Greenwood is closing in on his 100th career victory, as he begins the season with 94 career wins, all of them here at USD. Greenwood should be able to surpass this 100-win mark this season, as he is averaging 11.75 wins per year over his first eight years at the helm of the Toreros women's soccer program.
SAN DIEGO AWARDED 2012 COLLEGE CUP: The University of San Diego is excited to announce that they will serve as host of the 2012 Women's College Cup, which will be held at Walter J. Zable Field at Torero Stadium. The national showcase will be held Nov. 30 and Dec. 2, and will be the first NCAA Division I national championship to be held on the USD campus. The event, which is made up of the two semifinals matches and finals of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship, has been hosted exclusively by Texas A&M and North Carolina State over nine of the last 10 years, with Kennesaw State University breaking up that trend in 2011. Women's soccer juggernaut North Carolina has also hosted seven times since the championship's inception in 1982. San Diego will become the first West Coast Conference school to play host to the final rounds of an NCAA championship in women's soccer on its own campus.
BUTERA NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-WCC TEAM: Sophomore midfielder/forward Mariah Butera was the lone Torero selected to the All-WCC Preseason team. Butera, an All-WCC Freshman team selection a year ago, returns to the Toreros after an impressive freshman campaign, in which she scored five goals, and added in a pair of assists for 12 points.
TOREROS TABBED THIRD IN WCC PRESEASON POLL: Santa Clara has been selected as the preseason favorite to win the 2012 WCC women's soccer title. Pepperdine and the San Diego were picked to finish second and third, respectively, in this year's poll. The Waves earned 52 points and a first place vote, while the Toreros tallied 48 points in the poll. Following its debut WCC campaign, BYU finished fourth in the 2012 preseason poll with 45 points. The University of Portland, a 2011 NCAA participant, earned 42 points along with a first place vote to finish fifth. The Pilots were followed by Saint Mary's College (26 points) and Loyola Marymount University (21 points), with the University of San Francisco (17 points) and Gonzaga University (10 points) rounding out the survey.
THE GREENWOOD FILE: Since taking over the San Diego women's soccer program in 2003, Ada Greenwood has upheld the rich soccer tradition that San Diego is known for and continues to build a successful and nationally recognized program. Just the third coach in USD's storied 16 year history, Greenwood has compiled an overall record of 94-67-18 in his seven seasons at the helm. As San Diego's top assistant from 1998-2002, Greenwood helped USD to a 66-30-5 record and four NCAA College Cup appearances. Since taking over the reigns as head coach, Greenwood has guided the Torero to five NCAA Tournament appearances including three straight from 2007-09.
