SAN DIEGO - San Diego plays host to a pair of challenging opponents this weekend as it welcomes UC Irvine and defending national champion No. 12 USC to Torero Stadium.
The Toreros (1-5) open the weekend against the Anteaters (3-1-3) on Friday at 5 p.m. (PT). The game will be part of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team, which plays immediately following the women's game, and one ticket is good for both games.
USD concludes the weekend against the Trojans (4-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Both games will be streamed live for free on theW.tv and live statistics will be available via USDToreros.com.
LACE UP FOR PEDIATRIC CANCER
San Diego will wear gold shoe laces for Friday's game against UC Irvine to support Lace Up for Pediatric Cancer -- a group dedicated to helping kids with cancer and their families.
LAST TIME OUT
USD dropped a 3-0 decision this past Friday at Long Beach State. The Toreros surrendered a goal early and was unable to overcome the deficit.
USD's defense did well to keep the team within striking distance for a majority of the match, holding the 49ers to one goal through 52 minutes. However, the Toreros were unable to level the score and LBSU was able to add a pair of second-half insurance goals.
USD's defense has had a quality start to the season and been a key component to keeping the Toreros within striking distance in each game.
Michel has registered four or more saves in 4-of-6 games this season, including a career-best 10 stops against Texas A&M.
The Toreros backline -- consisting primarily of Emma Barrow, Courtney Coate, Natalie Copenhaver and Tara Meier -- have done well to limit the opposition's attack through the center of the field and push attackers out wide.
OFFENSE FINDING ITS RHYTHM
USD got on the scoreboard for the first time at San Diego State (Sept. 1), then erupted for three goals against Denver (Sept. 3).
UC IRVINE SERIES HISTORY
The Toreros are 9-6-1 all-time against the Anteaters and are 1-1-1 in the past three meetings. UC Irvine won the most recent meeting in 2014, 2-1, on a deciding goal in the 63rd minute by Laura McGrail.
USC SERIES HISTORY
USD is 6-10-2 all-time against the Trojans. The series has had a series of momentum shifts throughout history after the teams went 2-2 in their first four meetings.
USC won five of six meetings from 2002-09. The Toreros responded with four straight wins from 2010-12. USD is 0-3-1 in the past four meetings against the Trojans.
