WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE: The University of San Diego women's soccer team (8-5-0, 0-1-0 WCC) will continue West Coast Conference play this week with a pair of Southern California rivals in Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine University. On Friday, the Toreros will head to Malibu for a 3 p.m. match with the Waves. On Sunday, USD will travel to Los Angeles for a 1 p.m. match with the 21st-ranked Lions.
LAST TIME OUT: Two late goals lifted the third-ranked Santa Clara University Broncos to a 2-0 win over the University of San Diego women's soccer team Sunday afternoon in the West Coast Conference opener for both teams. The first half was a defensive struggle with both teams having a good chance to tally a goal. USD almost broke into the scoring column first as freshman midfielder Hallie Huston hit a laser shot at the Santa Clara goalkeeper in the early minutes of the match, but the `keeper made a great save to preserve the 0-0 tie. Late in the second half, the Broncos finally were able to break through the stingy San Diego defense, as in the 77th minute Brittany Klein controlled a pass from Jordan Angeli and took a shot from 10 yards out that was able to get past USD's starting goalkeeper Brittany Cameron. The Broncos then scored the final goal of the match in the 88th minute when Amanda Poach was able to beat USD's Karen Cook, the second goalkeeper of the day for the Toreros, in a one-on-one situation to put the match at its final of 2-0. Huston led the Toreros in shots taken with two, and Leigh Ann Robinson, Allison Wolters and Vanessa Vella all tallied one shot on the afternoon. The Broncos outshot the Toreros 15-5 and had a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks. Cameron was charged with the loss for the Toreros allowing one goal and recording four saves. Her counterpart, Meagan McCRay, was credited with the win for the Broncos allowing no goals and recording three saves.
SCOUTING THE WAVES: Pepperdine University enters the contest with a 6-4-3 overall record and a 0-0-1 mark in the WCC after recording a scoreless tie with Loyola Marymount in both teams' WCC opener this past Sunday. The all-time series record between USD and Pepperdine is 6-5-1 in favor of the Toreros. The Waves are led offensively by a pair of four-goal scorers in Emily Wynne and McKenzie Hill with Wynne adding in six assists or a team-leading 14 points. Goalkeeper Kayla Stolte anchors down the defense for the Waves with her 0.84 goals-against-average. The Waves are under the direction of ninth-year head coach Tim Ward. During his tenure in Malibu, Ward has posted a record of 105-49-21.
SCOUTING THE LIONS: Loyola Marymount University enters the week with a 7-1-3 overall record and a 0-0-1 mark in the WCC after battling to a 0-0 tie with Pepperdine this past Sunday. During his tenure in Los Angeles, Murphy has posted a 102-76-24 record.
