SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team opened the 2013 campaign by splitting their doubleheader with McNeese State on Thursday evening at the USD Softball Complex. McNeese State edged USD 3-1 in game one, while the Toreros bounced back in game two for a 2-0 victory.
McNeese State (1-1) answered immediately with three runs in the top of the 5th, taking advantage of a pair of USD errors in the inning.
Despite a number of solid line drives that found McNeese State gloves, the Toreros were unable to mount the comeback. Chloe Kaneko hit a rocket right at the 2nd baseman with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 7th that turned into a game-ending double as Dana Prelsnik was doubled off 1st base.
Jenny Lahitte (0-1) took the loss in game one after throwing 7.0 innings allowing three earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts. Meagan Bond (1-0) picked up the win for McNeese State with 7.0 innings pitched of her own where she allowed one earned run on 10 hits and struck out five.
Caitlin Rooney went 3-for-3 in the game as well.
McNeese State threatened in the 5th by loading the bases trailing 2-0, but Coleman got pinch-hitter Emily Vincent swinging to end the inning.
Coleman (1-0) closed it out with a 1-2-3 7th inning to pick up her first win of the year. She struck out five and walked six in the victory. Bianca Lilly (0-1) was saddled with the loss after throwing 6.0 innings and allowing one earned run on six hits.
Prelsnik collected two hits in game two while Grabowski added another and Tatum Schultz picked up her first collegiate knock by going 1-for-3.
The Toreros travel to Santa Barbara next week for the Gaucho Classic Feb. 15-17. USD will open on Friday, Feb. 15 with a 1 pm game vs. Fresno State followed by a 3 pm contest against host UC Santa Barbara.
