LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The University of San Diego softball team (2-3) finished the Sportco Kick Off Classic with an 8-4 win over the hosting school, UNLV, Sunday afternoon. The Toreros won their last two games of the weekend after dropping their first three.
Mary Grabowski put the Toreros on the board first when she launched a home run to centerfield in the top of the second inning. The Toreros tacked on one more two batters later when Charly Swanberg knocked in Olivia Sandusky, who had singled and stole second.
The Toreros scored two more runs in the following inning to extend their lead to 4-0. Dana Prelsnik had a leadoff double and eventually came around to score on a Caitlin Rooney sacrifice bunt. Chloe Kaneko, who reached on an infield single, also touched home when she scored after Tatum Schultz reached on an error.
The Toreros tacked on another run in the fourth inning when Prelsnik and Kylie Ordos hit back the back doubles.
The Rebels got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Gariess hit a home run to left field.
The Toreros offense kept humming in the sixth inning, when they scored three runs on four hits. Sandusky led off the inning with a single and Kylie Ordos followed her with a double to right field. Sandusky would come in to score on a Prelsnik single. Sierra Berryessa, who pinch ran for Ordos, along with Prelsnik, were knocked in by a Kaneko two-run double to right center.
The Rebels were able to score three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but it was too little too late as the Toreros went on to win 8-4.
Senior Jenny Lahitte (2-1) earned the win, allowing four runs and five hits in 5.2 inning while striking out six.
The Toreros will return to action on Wednesday when they head to Cal State Fullerton for a 6:00 p.m. game.
