Riverside, CA - The University of San Diego softball team defeated San Jose State, 3-1 in the final day of play at the UC Riverside Invitational Sunday morning.
The Torero victory put them at .500 with a 2-2 record. San Jose State also moves to 2-2 with the loss.
San Diego jumped off to a quick start when in the top of the second inning Nichole Valenzuela singled. Ashlee Nunes hit a ground ball down the right side of the field for a triple scoring Valenzuela and taking a 1-0 lead. San Jose State quickly responded in the bottom half of the inning tying the game 1-1.
It was a pitchers duel through four scoreless innings until the seventh inning when Sara Mason doubled down the right side. After Gina McFarland grounded out to the pitcher, Danielle Treiber stepped up to the plate and knocked a dong over the left field fence for 3-1 lead. The Toreros defense held strong which got them the win.
The Toreros return to San Diego to take on cross-town rival San Diego State for a single game at 6pm at the San Diego State Softball Complex.
