SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The Torero softball team wrapped up play at the Gaucho Classic at UC Santa Barbara on Sunday afternoon with a pair of extra-inning contests. USD (3-4) outlasted Fresno State 8-7 in nine innings in game one before getting edged by UC Santa Barbara 3-2 in eight innings in game two.
Danielle Mavridis collected three hits in game one, including a grand slam that put USD ahead in the bottom of the fifth. Caitlin Rooney and Lauren Tomey each had two hits and an RBI against Fresno State. Tomey added another two hits in game two and has now hit safely in her past five games.
The Toreros captured game one in walk-off fashion. With international tiebreaker rules in effect and Tatum Schultz placed on second base to start the inning, Rooney delivered the game-winning RBI with a one-out double to left field in the bottom of the ninth that scored Schultz.
The offense got started for both teams right off the bat as Fresno State (6-6) plated a couple in the top of the first on a two-run base hit.
USD answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the inning after the Toreros took advantage of two Bulldog errors to get runners in scoring position for Tomey to drive one in with a single to right field.
Trailing 4-2 in the bottom of the fifth, USD erupted for five runs to take a 7-4 lead, highlighted by Mavridis' two-out grand slam.
Fresno State rallied back to tie it 7-7 in the top of the seventh with a two-out RBI single and a two-run home run.
Cassidy Coleman (2-1) earned the win for the Toreros, throwing all 9.0 innings, allowing four earned runs on 12 hits while striking out eight.
In the second game of the doubleheader, UCSB (8-2) got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second on a bases-loaded walk.
USD evened it at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Mary Grabowski drove in a run with an RBI single.
UCSB responded by going up 2-1 in the bottom half of the inning before the Toreros tied it up in the top of the fifth on an RBI double by Dana Prelsnik.
The score remained knotted at 2-2 until the Gauchos plated the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth with an RBI double.
Both teams had opportunities to pull ahead in the late innings. USD had runners at first and third with two outs in the top of the sixth but was unable to push across the go-ahead run. Likewise, UCSB stranded two runners in the bottom of the seventh.
Jenny Lahitte (1-3) was saddled with the loss in game two after throwing 7.1 innings allowing only two earned runs on seven hits with four strikeouts but walked five.
USD went 2-3 in the Gaucho Classic with both victories coming against Fresno State.
The Toreros return to action Feb. 22-24 when they travel to Riverside for a tournament with UC Riverside, Weber State and Boise State.
