SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior Alicia Massie hit a walk-off grand-slam in the eighth inning to win 8-4 over the Long Beach State 49ers (4-9) in game two Sunday afternoon at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational.
"Alicia Massei, as a senior team captain, it's where we want her with the game on the line," said head coach Melissa McElvain. "We have all the confidence in her abilities that she will execute when the time comes, and she did just that today."
The 49ers got off to a quick start posting two quick runs in the top of the first inning taking a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, San Diego responded tying the game 2-2. Burk poked an RBI single through the right side allowing Treiber to reach home plate for the 3-2 lead.
The 49ers posted two runs to re-take the lead 4-3. San Diego came back in the bottom half of the inning with Casciola on third base and Celine Pujol pinch running at first base and two outs, Treiber hit a single to third base scoring Casciola and moving Pujol to second. That run tied the game 4-4 taking the game to extra innings.
USD held strong defensively in the top half of the eighth allowing no runs scored by the 49ers. Then, in the bottom of the 8th inning, with the bases loaded, Alicia Massei smashed a homerun over the left field fence for the 8-4 win.
"Our team needs to realize this game should not have gone eight innings," commented McElvain. "But we got the win and overcame this adversity we faced. We kept battling and turned things around in our favor."
