Senior Alicia Massei hit a walk-off grand-slam to lift the Toreros to an 8-4 win over Long Beach State Sunday Afternoon
Feb. 25, 2007
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior Alicia Massie hit a walk-off grand-slam in the eighth inning to win 8-4 over the Long Beach State 49ers (4-9) in game two Sunday afternoon at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational.
"Alicia Massei, as a senior team captain, it's where we want her with the game on the line," said head coach Melissa McElvain. "We have all the confidence in her abilities that she will execute when the time comes, and she did just that today."
The 49ers got off to a quick start posting two quick runs in the top of the first inning taking a 2-0 lead. In the bottom half of the inning, San Diego responded tying the game 2-2. Valenzuela grounded out to second base to start the inning. Carey Casciola took base on balls, then advanced to second base on Kathleen Bonja's single to left field. Treiber walked loading the bases for Virginia Fritsch who popped up for the second out. Keely Helbock reached first base on a fielding error by the 49er shortstop advancing all runners one base and cutting the lead 2-1. Katie Burk then singled to the shortstop moving all runners ahead one base and tying the game 2-2.
It was an offensive struggle for the next four and a half innings when in the bottom of the sixth inning, USD scored a single run. Danielle Treiber hit a single up the middle. Fritsch laid down a sacrifice bunt for Treiber who tore through second and slid into third base nearly avoiding being thrown out. Burk poked an RBI single through the right side allowing Treiber to reach home plate for the 3-2 lead.
The 49ers posted two runs to re-take the lead 4-3. San Diego came back in the bottom half of the inning with Casciola on third base and Celine Pujol pinch running at first base and two outs, Treiber hit a single to third base scoring Casciola and moving Pujol to second. That run tied the game 4-4 taking the game to extra innings.
USD held strong defensively in the top half of the eighth allowing no runs scored by the 49ers. Then, in the bottom of the 8th inning, with the bases loaded, Alicia Massei smashed a homerun over the left field fence for the 8-4 win.
"Our team needs to realize this game should not have gone eight innings," commented McElvain. "But we got the win and overcame this adversity we faced. We kept battling and turned things around in our favor."
Offensively for the Toreros against Long Beach State, Kathleen Bonja hit 3-for-4 with one run scored. Danielle Treiber hit 2-for-3 with one run scored and one RBI. Katie Burk hit 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Alicia Massei hit 1-for-4 with four RBI and one run scored.
Defensively for USD, Katie Jo Nelson pitched seven full innings allowing five hits and striking out eight batters. Nelson moves to 2-1 overall.
In the morning game, the Toreros fell to the No. 25 University of Oregon Ducks 6-0. USD's defense held the Ducks scoreless through two innings before UO recorded four runs on four hits. The Ducks scored another two runs in the fourth inning on three hits.
The Toreros posted six hits on the day. Virginia Fritsch went 2-for-3 with a double. Katie Burk, Danielle Treiber, Jennifer Ellenbeck, and Nichole Valenzuela all went 1-for-3.
