SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The USD softball team (4-5) knocked off Detroit Mercy 6-4 in their home opener Friday evening. After the Titans scored two runs in the top of the first, USD answered with three in the bottom of the first and didn’t trail the rest of the game.
Detroit Mercy jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead. Laura Villagrana tripled to deep right field and the next batter, Savvy Ferstle, knocked her in with a single. Ferstle advanced to second on an infield groundout, and then stole third and came home to score on an errant throw to third.
The Toreros responded with three runs in the bottom of the first. With runners on first and second, Kailey Hill and Lauren Kane hit back-to-back RBI singles. Freshman Madison Casiano then hit a sacrifice fly to right field to give USD a 3-2 lead.
The Titans brought the score to 4-3 USD after scoring an unearned run in the top of the third.
Lauren Kane led off the third inning with a double that hit the base of the wall in dead center field. Three batters later, Berriatua knocked her in with a RBI single up the middle.
The Toreros scored an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth, taking advantage of a Titan miscue.
Detroit Mercy added a run in the top of the seventh with a pair of doubles.
Spence, Kane and Berriatua all notched two hits for USD.
Freshman Delanie Heller earned the save in her collegiate debut. She allowed one run on two hits.
The Titans’ Liz Murphy (3-4) was charged with the loss allowing five earned runs on ten hits.
The Toreros have two games Saturday, hosting Boston University at 3:30 followed by UC Davis at approximately 6:00 p.m.
