SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The University of San Diego softball team captured the championship at the San Diego Classic I on Sunday afternoon with their 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Cal State Northridge at the Santee Sportsplex. The Toreros went a perfect 5-0 over the weekend and have now won six-straight contests overall.
Shortstop Kylie Ordos proved the difference maker against CSUN, going 2-for-3 and driving in the eventual game-winning run with an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth. Catcher Taylor Hensley launched her third home run of the season and second of the weekend. Third baseman Chloe Kaneko went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Jenny Lahitte struck out nine hitters in 5.0 innings out of the bullpen.
The Matadors (4-16) put pressure on USD start Cassidy Coleman early by putting runners in scoring position in the top of the first, but Coleman managed to work out of the jam by getting back-to-back fly outs.
In the top of the third, CSUN got on the board when USD center fielder Dana Prelsnik dropped a shallow fly ball that allowed Madeline Sale to score from third. Two batters later, Jessica Fridwell singled in between shortstop and third base to bring home another Matador run. With the bases loaded, Lahitte struck out the next two CSUN hitters but not before they had already taken a 2-0 lead.
USD (9-6) answered in the bottom half of the inning when Kaneko scorched a ball through the left side that plated Morgan Kurtz and cut the CSUN lead to 2-1. The Toreros had the bases loaded in that inning but Caitlin Rooney grounded out to third stranding the runners.
CSUN again loaded the bases in the top of the fifth, but Lahitte managed to work free of the jam without allowing a run to score when she struck out Tiffini Lucero to end the half inning.
Still trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, USD had two quick outs from their first two hitters before Hensley skied a ball that hugged the left field line and just stayed fair as it cleared the fence, tying the game at 2-2.
The Toreros then took the lead for the first time in the game in the bottom of the sixth after Lauren Tomey got on base with a one-out single. Pinch-runner Allison Stalberger advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Katie Emerson before Ordos laced a ball that deflected off the outstretched glove of the shortstop and fell in shallow left for the base hit. Ordos was thrown out trying to advance to second on the throw home but Stalberger was able to score the go-ahead run and put USD up 3-2.
Lahitte (4-3) earned the win, allowing just two hits and no runs, while Mia Pagano (3-9) received the loss in relief for CSUN, throwing 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out one.
USD returns to action on Tuesday, Mar. 6th with an 8:00 pm game against Maine at San Diego State.
