SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The bats woke up on Wednesday evening as the USD softball team captured a 5-1 home win over the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. The Toreros (9-11) racked up 12 hits in the game to break out of a quiet offensive streak as a team.
Leading the way for the Toreros were Caitlin Rooney (2-for-4) and Mary Grabowski (2-for-3), who each collected two hits with a pair of RBI. Lauren Tomey went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate, while Chloe Kaneko tallied two hits with a run driven in as well.
Three consecutive two-out singles led to USD's first run of the ballgame, capped off by Rooney's RBI single up the middle that brought home Kaneko.
South Dakota State (8-13) came right back in the top of the second and tied the game at 1-1 when Marlee Petersen ripped a single into left field with a runner on second that brought the run home.
USD retook the lead with an RBI single by Kaneko and a run-scoring double from Rooney in the bottom of the fifth. Grabowski then gave USD a little more breathing room with a two-out, two-run single down the right field line that put the Toreros up 5-1.
Mickell Escobar came in to close the game in the top of the seventh and, after giving up a leadoff hit, got the next three hitters to ground out to Kylie Ordos at short.
Jenny Lahitte (3-6) picked up the win, throwing 6.0 innings where she allowed one run on six hits, while striking out five and walking three.
The Toreros return to action on Sunday, Mar. 10 with a 2 pm contest against Bryant University at the USD Softball Complex.
