The Sacramento State Hornets defeated USD 2-0 and 9-1 to sweep a doubleheader for the second consecutive day. San Diego falls to 13-20 (0-4 PCSC) on the year, while Sacramento State improves to 24-16 (4-0 PCSC).
In game one, the Hornets' Jessica Rojo hit a two-run single to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning. The Toreros were unable to put anything together against Nicole Deatherage for the second day in a row, as she pitched her third consecutive shutout. Gina McFarland led USD with two hits, while Rebekah Bradford, Alicia Massei, Marissa Merchain and Cindy McGee each added a base hit. Anna Russell received the loss for the Toreros, allowing two runs and five hits in six innings.
Sacramento State took an early lead again in game two as they put together four hits and scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning. San Diego got on the board in the third when McFarland drove in Ashlee Nunes on a double to make it a 4-1 game. The Hornets took advantage of back-to-back Torero errors in the fourth to score five runs, increasing their lead to 9-1. USD was unable to score in the top of the fifth, ending the game at 9-1.
The Toreros now head up to Oregon for a five-game road trip. They play a nonconference match against the Oregon State Beavers on April 8th, followed by conference doubleheaders against Portland State on April 9th and 10th. San Diego returns home on April 17th for a doubleheader against Loyola Marymount, starting at 12 noon.
